Batman's creator, Bob Kane, was a great movie fan and his love for film provided the impetus for several Batman characters, among them, Catwoman.
She was partially inspired by 1930's film star Jean Harlow who at Kane's then early and "impressionable age ... seemed to personify feminine pulchritude at its most sensuous."
Wanting to give his Batman comic books sex appeal and someone who could appeal to female readers as a female Batman, Kane and writer Bill Finger created a "friendly foe who committed crimes but was also a romantic interest in Batman's rather sterile life." She was meant to give a love interest and to engage Batman in a chess game with him trying to reform her. She actually was also a test before making a batgirl to see how the public would respond to a personality like catwoman. As it turned out, only catwoman could handle the personality given to her, and once batgirl was made she was tamed quite well.
At the same time this character was meant to be different from other Batman villains like the Joker in that she was never a killer or completely evil.
As for using cat imagery with their Catwoman, Kane states he and Bill Finger saw cats "were kind of the antithesis of bats." He meant to show the differences between male and female and the tangled web it can weave. *winks*
Through all of her incarnations though the comics and television and even the film Batman Returns (BASED on the characters Bob Kane created) she is known as "Selina Kyle".
Catwoman — 1st called "The Cat" — first appears in Batman #1 as a mysterious burglar and jewel thief, revealed at the end of the story to be socialite Selina Kyle. Although the story does not have her wearing her iconic catsuit, it establishes her core personality as a femme fatale who both antagonizes and attracts Batman.
Catwoman's origin —
and, to an extent, her character — was revised in 1986 when writer Frank Miller and artist David Mazzucchelli published Batman: Year One, a revision of Batman's origin. As the story progresses Selina is led to a bit of burglary, she dons a catsuit costume that her now former pimp/ex boyfriend gave to her the day that she told him she was out of the buisness.
After costuming herself so as not to be revealed, she gets a taste for burglary after having to commit one neccessary crime.. and begins to do it in more of a Robin Hood way than an actual theif.
This is however how she runs into BatMan. After a small confrontation, she begins to be inspired to stay in her costume and become the "catwoman" after she seeing Batman in action with others. Selina gets the idea that if there is a "bat" why can't there be a "cat"?
The 1989 Catwoman limited series (Catwoman: Her Sister's Keeper) by writer Mindy Newell and artist J.J. Birch expanded on Miller's Year One origin.
Selinas early childhood life included an abusive father who became alchoholic after the suicide of her mother. Once both her parents passed away Selina was left alone, and decided to fend for herself on the streets. Her Sister's Keeper explores Selina's early life having to be a prostitute and later the start of her career as Catwoman.
The story includes Selinas sister Maggie Kyle, who survived a different way than Selina by becoming a nun. Her pimp/exboyfriend "stan" becomes increasingly more abusive and Selina decides it is the last straw when she witnesses his crimes first hand and then begins to fear for her sisters life after eluding to the fact that she wants out of the business.
She begins to study self defense and martial arts. Her teacher inspires Selina to become more than what she has been and she realizes that prostitution is no life for her or for "Holly".
Holly Robinson is a young runaway who idolizes Selina and whom Selina takes into her home which is covered in stray cats as well whom are free to come and go. The Story culminates with Stan abducting and violently abusing her sister Maggie who, in contrast to Selina, is a nun.
Selina sees no other way out but to kill Stan to save her sister and herself. After this however she develops a VERY strong "no kill" rule. Selinas' alter ego Catwoman develops and changes into different personifications, as Selina wonders about life, about stealing from the rich to give charity to the poor, about dangers, and about batman... Catwoman is known to have nine lives because of near death experiences.. the reasoning behind how she loses her first differs, or why she has these lives is never fully revealed but there are many theories.
Soon there may be a reappearance of CatWoman in the darker more realistic yet less surreal and colorful, movies.. (which include batman begins and the dark knight)!!!!!
There have been hints that Selina Kyle will be making an appearance soon, perhaps not in the next film which WILL include the penguin, but very soon.
Hollywood is currently searching for the actress that would best portray Selina Kyle.
(pssst my vote is for angelina Jolie or
sharon stone lol) We need a strong sexy woman but we also need that cattidude.. and not many have THAT!
