January 29, 2013 Kansas will have been a state for 152 years. It entered in 1861 and after a lot of bloody battles became a free state and fought on the side of the North or Union in the American Civil war. The people of Kansas wanted to be free but a renegade group from Missouri called Quantrill's raiders (after the war) and other Boarder Ruffians invaded the eastern part of the state mostly Lawrence and started wars with the the residence of Kansas trying to force it to become a confederate state. Much horrible and corrupt political fights in Washington were taking place but in the end Kansas entered as its residence wanted and fought for anti slavery. People native to Kansas are called Jayhawkers is a term that came to prominence just before the American Civil War in Bleeding Kansas, where it was adopted by militant bands affiliated with the free-state cause. These bands, known as "Jayhawkers", were guerrilla fighters who often clashed with pro-slavery groups from Missouri known at the time as "Border Ruffians". After the Civil War, the word "Jayhawker" became synonymous with the people of Kansas. Lawrence Kansas got the brunt of the fighting and today the University of Kansas is there. KU's mascot is the Jayhawk. Today the term is also a nickname for a native-born Kansan ..... In this picture are several things that represent the state. Wheat Farming as Kansas is the biggest producer of Hard Red Winter Wheat in the world. One nick name for Kansas is "the bread basket of the world." Bread is made from Hard Red Winter Wheat. The Kansas state flower is the Sunflower, the state animal is a Bison also known as a buffalo, Farming is the main economy of Kansas, The reptile is a fancy box turtle can you see in it this picture? The State Tree is a Cottonwood that stands in the background, And the bird is a Meadowlark. (although on blingee they call these birds a finch they are not) they are clearly the markings of a meadowlark. However in defense of whoever put it on blingee a meadowlark and finch are similar in look. But the "V" ring around the neck in the front is the give away, to make sure it is a meadowlark. "Ad Astra Per Aspera" Latin for the English "To the stars through difficulties" Is the KS Motto. I have including a windmill as that was on nearly every farm for pumping water for the livestock and even into cisterns that would hold water for the homemaker in many families. There is a bell on the house the farmer's wife often used it to call her children in from play, to let everyone know it was time for dinner, so it soon became known as a "Dinner Bell" It was huge and could be heard for a long ways away. The same size as a Church bell. Kansas was the 34th state to enter the union. The name Kansas is an American Indian word meaning. Wind People. There is certainly a lot of high winds in KS. (KS is the abbreviation for Kansas.) The state Song is Home On the Range. Another nick name for KS is the "Sunflower Sate." North Central nearly NW Kansas holds the honor of being both the Geographical and Geodetic centers of the Continental USA also known as the Lower 48 states. The Geographical center is near Lebanon KS far north and on the western edge of Central Kansas. and the Geodetic center is 42 miles south or between Osborne and Bloomington KS.
