Joseph leads a donkey on the long journey from Nazareth in Gallilee, to Bethlehem just outside of Jerusalem. Mary rode the donkey being pregnant with the Lord Jesus, and nearly due to deliver. They needed to do this as the Roman rulers were taxing all residents, who had to return to their family home. Being both of David's line they had to go to Bethlehem.
