⌈4/20/19⌋ 20 years ago on this day, a horrendous act was inflicted upon the students and teachers of columbine high school. on what seemed to be an average day soon turned into a bloody massacre and the deadliest school shooting in united states history. it resulted in the deaths of 12 students, 1 teacher, and the 2 gunmen themselves. dozens others were injured. as for the survivors, they were forced to bear witness to the murders of their fellow classmates and friends, all while juggling the pain of survivors guilt and learning how to heal and recover. since columbine, mass shootings in the united states have not improved, but have only worsened and become much more frequent. columbine was an anomaly at the time, but by the 2010s it was barely in the top 10 of deadliest mass shootings. it marked the beginning of public awareness regarding gun safety as well as mental health. 20 years on, columbine is still closely studied as we try to learn how to prevent similar tragedies. may the innocent victims rest in peace ღ they will never be forgotten.
