Frankincense to offer have I ,Incense owns a Deity nigh, Prayer and praising, all men raising, Worship Him, God most high.....This Sunday January 19, 2014 is the Sunday we celebrate the second gift the wise men brought to the young child Jesus, that of Frankincense. Matt. 2:11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. Gold for Royalty, and Frankincense for his Priesthood. As with last week’s telling of Gold, with Frankincense there is more to it than just incense and there is even more to the incense than just its smell. It came to me one day why those three gifts? I admit I do have an inquisitive mind maybe that is part of the reporter in me ,or the historian not sure which perhaps both, whatever the case maybe, I decided to research out these three gifts, because I thought with Jesus being the Great Physician perhaps there were also healing agents to them. As you read last week with Gold there are numerous reasons why gold. This week we explore Frankincense that was used in often in purification rites of the Jews and early church.. and even today in the Jewish faith, Roman Catholic, Episcopalian, Eastern Orthodox, Lutheran and other Christian churches in what is called High Mass or High Church. The Jewish faith and numerous Christian Churches use Frankincense when mixed with oils to anoint newborn infants, initiates, and members entering into new phases of their spiritual lives. With these reasons it was thought Frankincense was showing Christ’s Priesthood which indeed it does. But there is more to the story. Frankincense is known as Boswellia. Differences in soil and climate create even more diversity of the resin, even within the same species. Boswellia Sacra trees are considered unusual for their ability to grow in environments so unforgiving that they sometimes grow out of solid rock. The initial means of attachment to the rock is unknown but is accomplished by a bulbous disk-like swelling of the trunk. This growth prevents it from being ripped from the rock during violent storms that frequent this region. This feature is slight or absent in trees grown in rocky soil or gravel. The trees start producing resin when they are about eight to 10 years old. Rather like our life in Christ that no matter the storm that comes as long we are fastened to the solid rock of Christ we will not be moved but will keep on living in Him with his protection. Also depending on where it grows depends on how it reacts as well.. as we in Christ allows us to roll with the punches because we know who is in control and always has our best interest at heart. It is believed that Frankincense has been traded on the Arabian Peninsula and in North Africa for more than 5,000 years. It was one of the ingredients in the perfume of the sanctuary (Exodus 30:34), and was used as an accompaniment of the meal-offering (Leviticus 2:1, 2:16, 6:15, 24:7). When burnt it emitted a fragrant odor, and the incense was a symbol of the Divine name (Malachi 1:11 ; Song of Solomon 1:3) and an emblem of prayer (Psalm 141:2 ; Luke 1:10 ; Revelation 5:8, 8:3). It was often associated with myrrh (Song of Solomon 3:6, 4:6) and with it was made an offering to the infant Jesus (Matthew 2:11). Frankincense, (Boswellia serrata) has been used for hundreds of years for treating arthritis. Extracts have been clinically studied for osteoarthritis and joint function, particularly for osteoarthritis of the knee. Positive effects of Boswellia in some chronic inflammatory diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, bronchial asthma, osteoarthritis, ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease have been reported. Some see Boswellia serrata as a promising alternative to NSAIDs (i.e. aspirin, etc.), warranting further investigation in pharmacological studies and clinical trials is needed. In 2008 an enriched extract of "Indian Frankincense" ( Boswellia serrata) was used in a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study of patients with osteoarthritis. Patients receiving the extract showed significant improvement in their arthritis in as little as seven days. The compound caused no major adverse effects and, according to the study authors, is safe for human consumption and long-term use. In a study published in 2009, it was reported that "Frankincense oil appears to distinguish cancerous from normal bladder cells and suppress cancer cell viability." In a 2012 study, data suggest that incensole acetate (IA) a Boswellia resin constituent solely found in Frankincense. But only when burned as incense.” modulates the: hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) glands leading to beneficial behavioral effects supporting its potential as a novel treatment of depressive-like disorders." What an amazing gift by the way it is also found in cosmetics, skin care products (as it supposed to be good for healing skin), and medications. Frankincense is also used in perfumery and aromatherapy.. The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the dry resin and of course frankincense is an incense and even used in candles. In supplements and medications the name is usually Boswellia serrata Not frankincense. As you can see there is more to Frankincense than just incense or something that smells good, or not, depending on your sniffer. Even when lit, and it send its fragrance throughout the room, it is more than just a fragrance it appears it too has healing properties. Moreover, even today more and more is being found out about this wonderful gift the Magi brought to Jesus oh so long ago. Wishing a Blessed and Happy third week in Epiphany ..Connie
